What is Carbon Certification?

Carbon certificates or carbon credits are financial instruments created within a system aimed at reducing or offsetting greenhouse gas emissions. These certificates are particularly utilized in the fight against climate change and possess the following key features:

  • Carbon Reduction or Offsetting: Carbon certificates are used to reduce or offset greenhouse gas emissions. Projects generating these certificates may include various activities such as renewable energy projects, energy efficiency improvements, forestry projects, or greenhouse gas capture and storage projects.
  • Certificate Generation: Carbon certificates are produced as a result of greenhouse gas reduction or offset projects. When projects successfully reduce or offset a certain amount of greenhouse gas emissions, these achievements are documented with certificates.
  • Trade and Market: Carbon certificates can be purchased by companies or individuals looking to invest in projects that reduce or offset emissions. These certificates are tradable in carbon markets, providing a useful mechanism for companies or countries aiming to meet emissions reduction or offset targets.
  • Certificate Standards: There are many different carbon project development standards. Examples include BioCarbon Registry, CDM CER, Global Carbon Registry, Gold Standard, and Verra-VCS. Among these standards, Gold Standard and Verra-VCS Standard play a significant role in the voluntary market, where companies engaged in carbon emission offsetting and reduction processes often prefer certificates created based on these standards.

Carbon certificates not only support the reduction or offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions but also assist in financing sustainable projects. These certificates enable businesses, governments, and individuals to meet sustainability goals and contribute to the fight against climate change.
